At MARVEL COMICS ( formerly TIMELY
AND ATLAS ) Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, followed by
Gene Colan, John Buscema and John Romita broke new ground
while at DC COMICS Jim Mooney, Nick Cardy, Curt Swan,
Murphy Anderson as well as the now matured teen hopefuls
from the early forties sparked a Superhero explosion
that continues to this day.
But as in the early 1950s when EC COMICS changed the
face of the industry, the late 1960S saw the emergence
of a new crop of revolutionary artists who would once
again take comics in an entirely new direction. Students
of both classic illustration as well as comics masters
such as Will Eisner and Jack Kirby, newcomers Jim Steranko
and Neal Adams and their younger compatriots Bernie
Wrightson, Barry Smith Mike Kaluta and Jeff Jones added
their peculiar visions to the artistic mix that was
comics. They revitalized established characters like
THE X-MEN, CAPTAIN AMERICA , BATMAN, GREEN LANTERN and
THE AVENGERS and even pulp characters THE SHADOW, CARSON
OF VENUS and CONAN THE BARBARIAN before blazing new
trails with their own characters and work in such diverse
fields as book illustration,....................
fine art and movie storyboarding. If you ever get the
chance to...........................
see the work of any of the comics masters mentioned
in this ..................................article,
either as original comic art or in print, don't pass
it up.
